NWC 24-Gallon Ford Transit Spare Tire Basket Water Tank (TR-ST-24) Installation:
STEP 1 — For mounting the TR-ST-24 water tank we will start by removing the factory spare tire from its location. Please see the owner’s manual for information.STEP 2 — Once the tire is removed the factory cable mount will need to be removed from the bracket. This can be done by sliding the cable through the slot in the metal bracket. This assembly can be completely removed or it can be tied up above the mount and secured with cable ties or similar. The tire safety cable can be removed as well. There are 2 black rubber plugs noted in the picture that will need to be removed. These 2 holes are the locations for the smaller 7” L-bolts supplied with the tank. There are two similar holes for the 11” L-bolts on the cross member where the factory tire hanger cable was located as noted in the picture. Here are items to make note of:
- Tanks need to be vented (i.e. nonpressurized)
- Water in, water out, drain, and a tank sensor if needed.
STEP 3 —Begin by setting the tank in place and holding it up to the underneath of the van to get fitment.STEP 4 —Once in place install the L-bolts. Larger bolts towards the front of the van and shorter bolts at the rear of the van locations.STEP 5 —Install the flat plates included with the tank. The shorter of the two plates is for the rear 7” l-bolts and the wider plate is for the front 11” L-bolts. The washers and nyloc nuts will be placed next on the L-bolts. Once all nyloc nuts are hand tight you can tighten all 4 snug so there is no “free play”.The tank is now ready for plumbing.
How to Clean Our Camper Van Water Tanks:
Make sure you rinse the water tank before first use, as there can be plastic bits left in the tank from the manufacturing process.Nomadic Supply Company recommends using our Lippert Floë Compressed Air Camper Van Fresh Water Flushing System throughout the year to keep your water system completely pristine. In addition to flushing your water system you can also use bleach or vinegar to clean our fresh water tanks, or you can one of our camper van fresh water tank cleaning solutions. To clean your tank with bleach or vinegar follow the instructions below.Step 1: Drain the water tank completelyStep 2: Mix 4 oz bleach or vinegar with 1 1⁄2 gallons of hot waterStep 3: Pour bleach/vinegar solution into tankStep 4: Fill tank with fresh water until its fullStep 5: Let sit for 12 hoursStep 6: Drain the water tank completely, refill with fresh water and drain completely again (you may need to repeat this rinse step a few times)
Camper Van Water Tank Venting:
Polyethylene camper van water tanks must be vented. These fresh water tanks are not designed to handle pressure or a vacuum. A vent is necessary because as the tank is filled or emptied of its liquid an equal proportion of air must be displaced simultaneously. Discharge of a water tank without a vent would cause a vacuum to occur. A generally accepted rule concerning vent size is that it should be the same size as the tank’s largest outlet. The Nomadic Supply Stainless Steel 8-32mm Potable Water Hose FilterfromNomadic Supply Company® is used to keep debris & insects out of the ends of the vent hoses on external camper van water tanks such as our NWC 24-Gallon Ford Transit Spare Tire Basket Water Tank (TR-ST-24), NWC 28-Gallon Mercedes Sprinter Spare Tire Basket Water Tank (SP-ST-28), and our S&B 35-Gallon Mercedes Sprinter Spare Tire Basket Water Tank (10-3033).
